When installing a coil over kit or air shock, youre transferring the load of the cars weight from the lower control arm location to the shock location which was never designed to support the weight of the vehicle. Adding the crossmember strengthens that area and supports the new load. This basically reduces the possibility of damaging the frame at that location.
